'Home Alone': This Is What The McCallister House Looks Like Today

The McCallister house became a character in its own right, with its picture-perfect exterior and festive décor now being synonymous with holiday cheer. Most recently, Ratray played the role of the robber in “Home Sweet Home Alone,” the Disney+ reboot of the original 1990 classic holiday flick. “Though we’re older and wiser now (I’ve even got my own security firm), we’re never too old for holiday hijinks.

In the ad, Culkin, re-enacted scenes from the movie with Google Assistant and other 21st century appliances. Despite these peoples' outward opinions of him, Kevin is not nearly as immature as they make him out to be, , however, once Harry and Marv attempted to break into his house, he became more responsible, doing laundry and even going shopping. He was also able to defend his home from the Wet/Sticky Bandits, using very intricate traps to injure and incapacitate them.

From the indies sure to be jockeying for Oscars, to a new Halloween and Pinocchio, here are the movies we're most excited about this fall. We take you far past “Monster Mash” with a collection of October-ready tunes by legendary English outfits, classic rockers, iconic composers, and even swing and ska bands. In his new memoir, the actor shares some of the half-baked pitches he heard from people who wanted to reboot The Karate Kid — years before Cobra Kai came along. Alas, looks like we might have to trade in the Plaza for now for a night on the couch with a bowl of Ben and Jerrys and a Home Alone 2 rewatch. For a whirlwind 48 hours, Kevin is going to have to do a lot of household chores in order to pay his parents back for the mammoth cost he racked up (and that's not even counting the fact we went for a cheaper room!). What he ends up with is suite 411 – one of the most luxurious rooms in the entire hotel.

John Candy was available for only one day to film his scenes, which took 23 hours to shoot. He was only paid $414, since he did the film as a favor to Hughes. In return, he was the only actor Hughes allowed to go off-script; according to Columbus, all his dialogue was improvised. Hughes suggested to Columbus that they cast Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, because of his experience while shooting Uncle Buck. Columbus met with 200 other actors for the part, as he felt it was his "directorial responsibility". John Mulaney was asked to audition for the role of Kevin after being scouted in a children’s sketch comedy group, but his parents refused the opportunity.

And while only four lucky fans got to enjoy the memorable stay, the house’s brief stint on Airbnb gave us a peek inside — and a good idea of how the iconic property has changed over the years. Think booby traps, a candlelit dinner of microwavable macaroni and cheese, Kevin’s dad’s aftershave, 90s junk food, “Chicago’s finest pizza” and more, NBC Chicago reports. To offer the complete experience, the actor that played Kevin McCallister’s older brother, Buzz, would be the one welcoming guests, who would also be greeted with Christmas decorations, and some true Home Alone classics.

Many of the shots that focus on Kevin in the beginning of the movie are filmed from above his head, making him seem small and helpless. At the end of the movie, Kevin is mostly shot from below, making him seem taller and more confident. In December 2018, a 38-year old Macaulay Culkin reprised the role of Kevin in a Google Assistant commercial.

This time though as his dad and new girlfriend left on business; Kevin is alone with the grouchy butler Mr. Prescott and the sweet nanny Molly. Back in the picture is Marv Merchant, now married to a dork named Vera. Marv now claims to be the master as Harry is no longer in the group. But once again Kevin intervenes and discovers that Molly is actually Marv's mother. Prescott, who Kevin misconstrued as Marv's inside man, becomes Kevin's new ally in stopping the 3 criminals from succeeding in their plan.

On Christmas morning at the Plaza Hotel, Kevin and Buzz reconciled and Buzz allowed him to open up the first present. Kevin went to Central Park to give the pigeon lady the second turtledove. His father suddenly called out, "Kevin, you spent $967 on room service?!" at which point Kevin, knowing that he was in big trouble, ran away again, but this time back to the hotel. Kevin McCallister was a young boy who was mistakenly separated from his family twice and forced to defend himself against bumbling burglars Marv and Harry. He was the youngest child of Peter and Kate McCallister and the youngest sibling of Buzz, Megan, Linnie, and Jeff. The McCallister house is famously located at 671 Lincoln Ave in Winnetka — a small village in Cook County, Illinois, set roughly 16 miles north of downtown Chicago.

In fact, the house is one of the few properties that are blurred on Google Maps, an initiative that was likely taken by the owners to discourage fans from showing up uninvited. Remaining scenes filmed in the McCallister house were recreated or duplicated on a soundstage built in the gymnasium of the former campus of New Trier Township High School. If you’re wondering where to find it in real life, the real Home Alone house’s address is 671 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka, IL (though we’re pretty sure the new owners would rather not have fans lingering outside, so please respect their privacy). Built in the 1920s, the building is comprised of red brick and was built in the colonial Georgian style. As one enters the house, the infamous staircase welcomes guests, while the legendary living room seems to call out for the addition of cardboard cutouts of Michael Jordan. In real life, the attic is actually an attic bedroom with two grand suites and numerous nooks and crannies for storage.

Meanwhile, Harry and Marv finally realize that only Kevin is in the McCallister home, and on Christmas Eve, Kevin overhears them discussing plans to break into the house that night. Kevin starts to miss his family and asks the local Santa Claus impersonator if he could bring his family back for Christmas. He goes to church and watches a choir perform, and encounters Marley, who proves the rumors about him are false. Marley points out his granddaughter in the choir, and mentions he has never met her since she is the daughter of his estranged son. Upon its release, the movie was initially met with mixed reviews, but after raking in almost $286 million at the domestic box office alone, it quickly cemented itself as a Christmas classic, and a sequel was put into production. Kevin (Macaulay Culkin's only reprisal) is once again left behind, this time in New York City, with the very same "Wet Bandits" hot on his tail for seconds.

Additionally, the once hardwood floors are now decked out in white carpeting. The dining room, which featured red walls in the film, is now adorned in a warm cream color painted with vines and pear trees. Quite the improvement overall…unless you’re a diehard lover of 90s interior design. In fact, Google's Street View feature blurs out not only the house at 671 Lincoln Avenue but also its neighbors' homes and some signs that may give away details about the inhabitants of the street. Unfortunate for fans who were hoping to catch a glimpse of the home as it stands today.

But this cat-and-mouse chase turns out to be incredibly fun and lighthearted thanks largely to Kevin's hilarious brilliance. His ingenious tricks, from the Michael Jordan cutout train to the absolutely iconic "Keep the change, you filthy animal," recording, take a story that should have felt traumatic and instead chocks it full of holiday magic. Senta Moses, who played Tracy, recalled in 2020 that one of the most difficult scenes to shoot was the family's run through O'Hare International Airport to catch their flight. "There were thousands of extras, all expertly choreographed so none of us would be in danger running at full speed through the American Airlines terminal", she told The Hollywood Reporter. "And we ran at full speed. Sometimes we’d bump into each other, like a multi-car pileup on the expressway, and just crack up laughing ... There were so many setups and narrowly missed moments of disaster, but to my knowledge, no one got hurt."

Principal photography took place from February 14, 1990, to May 8, 1990, over a course of 83 days. It was built in the gym and empty swimming pool of the former New Trier High School building, previously used by Hughes for Uncle Buck and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where the production company had already set up its offices. The tree house in the back yard was built specifically for the film and dismantled after filming ended. The church exteriors were shot at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmette, Illinois, while the interiors were shot at Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park, Illinois.

During the filming of the first Home Alone, Pesci accidentally bit Culkin after getting too serious with his role, leaving a permanent scar. Culkin angrily berated Pesci, saying "I don't care how many OSCARS you have, or whatever, don't go biting a nine-year-old! What the heck's wrong with you!?". It is also said that Pesci intentionally avoided Culkin on set in order to make him genuinely frightened by the sight of him. Their next altercation occurred on the set of Home Alone 2 when Culkin jokingly asked Pesci why he never smiled.

Kate is overheard by Gus Polinski, the lead member of a traveling polka band, who offers to let her travel with them to Chicago in a moving van. The McCallister family is preparing to spend Christmas in Paris, gathering at Peter and Kate's home in a Chicago suburb on the night before their departure. Peter and Kate's youngest son, Kevin, is the subject of ridicule by his older siblings and cousins. Kevin inadvertently ruins the family dinner after a brief scuffle against his oldest brother Buzz, resulting in Kate sending him up to the attic. Kevin berates his mother for allowing the rest of the family to pick on him and wishes that his family would disappear. During the night, heavy winds create a power outage, disabling the alarm clocks and causing the family to oversleep.

Despite the movie being mostly recycled antics from the original film, pulling them out of suburbia and plopping them in the luxurious and expansive Big Apple makes it feel fresh and new. Another notable addition to the film is that OG Kevin's older brother, Buzz , reprises his role in the movie, showing that this isn't a reboot or remake, but actually a sequel. Buzz is now a local police officer and is… well, not the brightest, to put it nicely. Still, it's definitely a great Easter egg for fans of the original movies who will surely recognize him. This installment marks when the Home Alone series begins its derailment. After the massive success of the first two movies, a third movie was inevitable.
